What Is a DOCX File?
A DOCX file is a text document made in Microsoft Word. It has been the standard Word format since Word 2007. The name means "document" plus "X". The X comes from XML, the code Word uses to store what's inside.

How to Open a DOCX File From Email or WhatsApp
Most DOCX files arrive as attachments. On a phone, that's often where the trouble starts. Here is the easy way to open them.
From Gmail or Outlook
Tap or click the attachment and choose Download. On a computer, the file goes to your Downloads folder. On a phone, it goes to Downloads or the Files app. Then come back to this page, click "Choose file" and pick it.
From WhatsApp

Why Won't My DOCX File Open?
Sometimes a file just won't open. It's almost always one of these reasons, and most are easy to fix.
It's an old .doc file
Look at the end of the file name. If it says .doc and not .docx, it's the old format. See the DOC section above to change it to DOCX.
The file name has extra bits
Files sometimes download with odd names like report.docx(1), letter_docx or file.docx.zip. Rename the file so it ends in exactly .docx, then try again.
It has a password
Word can lock a file with a password. A locked file is scrambled, so no viewer can show it until the password is entered. Open it in Word, type the password, and save a copy without it.
The download didn't finish
A half-downloaded file is broken. Download it again and wait until it's done. If the sender told you the file size, check that yours matches.
The file is damaged
If Word can't open it either, the file itself is probably damaged. Ask the sender for a fresh copy. In Word, the "Open and Repair" option can sometimes save part of it.
The file is too big
