How to Open a DOCX File in Chrome

Chrome can open PDFs, pictures and web pages. But if you drag a Word file into Chrome, it usually just downloads it again. So how do you open a DOCX file in your browser?

The short answer: Chrome can’t read Word files on its own, but it can run tools that do. This guide shows you the easiest ways to open a DOCX file in Chrome on a computer, on Android and on a Chromebook.

Why doesn’t Chrome open DOCX files by itself?

Chrome has a built-in PDF viewer, so PDFs open right in a tab. It doesn’t have a built-in Word viewer. A DOCX file is a packed folder of XML files, and Chrome doesn’t know how to turn that into pages on its own.

That’s why Chrome treats a DOCX file like any other download. To see what’s inside, you need a website or app that can read the Word format. The good news is that several run right inside Chrome.

Method 1: Use an online DOCX viewer in Chrome

This is the fastest way. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and Android.

  1. Open Chrome and go to opendocxfile.com.
  2. Click Choose file and pick your DOCX file. You can also drag the file from a folder and drop it on the box.
  3. The document opens in the same tab, page by page.

Once it’s open, use the toolbar to zoom, fit the page to the window, copy the text, print, save as PDF or go full screen.

Here’s the part people like most: the file isn’t uploaded. Chrome reads it on your computer and shows it on the page. That makes it a safe choice for private files like contracts or CVs.

Method 2: Open a DOCX file in Chrome with Google Docs

Google Docs runs in Chrome and can open Word files. Use this if you need to edit the document.

  1. In Chrome, go to drive.google.com and sign in.
  2. Drag your DOCX file into the Drive window, or click New and then File upload.
  3. Double-click the file to preview it.
  4. Click Open with Google Docs at the top to edit it.

Microsoft’s free online Word works well in Chrome.

  1. Go to office.com and sign in with a Microsoft account.
  2. Upload your DOCX file to OneDrive.
  3. Click the file to open it in Word for the web.

How to open a DOCX file in Chrome on Android

On Android, Chrome downloads Word files to your Downloads folder. Here’s how to read them without installing a Word app.

  1. Download the DOCX file in Chrome. Wait for the download to finish.
  2. In Chrome, go to opendocxfile.com.
  3. Tap Choose file. Your phone shows a file picker.
  4. Go to Downloads and tap your DOCX file.

How to open a DOCX file on a Chromebook

Chromebooks run Chrome, so all the methods above work. You can also open the Files app and double-click a DOCX file. Your Chromebook will usually offer to open it with Google Docs or another Office app.

What about Chrome extensions?

Why does Chrome keep downloading my DOCX file?

That’s normal. When you click a link to a Word file, Chrome downloads it because it can’t display it. You’ll find it in your Downloads folder, or by pressing Ctrl+J on Windows or Cmd+Shift+J on a Mac to open the downloads list.

If a website sends a DOCX file the wrong way, Chrome may try to show it as text. You’ll see a page full of odd symbols. Don’t worry, the file is fine. Right-click the link and choose Save link as to download it properly. Then open it with one of the methods above.

  • Press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F to search for a word inside the document.
  • Use Chrome’s print window to save the document as a PDF. Choose Save as PDF as the printer.
