How to Open a DOCX File on Android

Many Android phones don’t come with a Word app. So when a DOCX file arrives by email or WhatsApp, you tap it and get an error like “No app can open this file”. Frustrating, but easy to fix.

This guide shows five free ways to open a DOCX file on Android. Some need no install at all. We’ll also show you where your downloaded files go, so you can always find them.

Method 1: Use an online viewer in Chrome

This works on any Android phone with a browser, and you don’t install anything.

1. Save the DOCX file to your phone. In email or WhatsApp, tap the download button.
2. Open Chrome and go to opendocxfile.com.
3. Tap Choose file.
4. Your phone shows a file picker. Tap Downloads, or tap the menu to browse other folders.
5. Tap your DOCX file.

The document opens and fits your screen. Use the zoom buttons for small text, and Copy text to grab everything at once. The file isn’t uploaded, because Chrome opens it on your phone.

Method 2: Preview it with Google Drive

Most Android phones come with Google Drive. Drive can preview Word files.

1. Open the Drive app.
2. Tap the plus button, then Upload, and pick your DOCX file.
3. Tap the uploaded file to preview it.

This saves a copy to your Google Drive. If the file is private, delete it from Drive when you’re done.

Method 3: Open it in the Google Docs app

Google Docs lets you read and edit Word files for free.

1. Install Google Docs from the Play Store if it’s not on your phone.
2. Go to your file in Gmail, WhatsApp or your Files app and tap it.
3. When Android asks which app to use, pick Docs.

Method 4: Use the Microsoft Word app

The Word app is free on the Play Store. It shows Word files with their exact layout.

1. Install Microsoft Word from the Play Store.
2. Tap your DOCX file and pick Word when asked.

Reading is free. Microsoft may ask you to sign in to edit, and some features need a subscription. The app is large, so it may not be worth it for one file.

Method 5: Use another office app

Apps like WPS Office and ONLYOFFICE also open DOCX files on Android. They’re free to use, but some show ads or ask you to upgrade. Stick to well-known apps from the Play Store, and check the reviews before installing.

Where are downloaded DOCX files on Android?

Usually in the Download folder. To find them:

• Open the Files app. It might be called Files by Google, My Files on Samsung, or File Manager.
• Tap Downloads.

1. Open the email in the Gmail app.
2. Tap the Word attachment to preview it.
3. To save it, tap the download icon on the attachment.

How to set a default app for Word files

When you tap a DOCX file, Android asks which app to use. Tap the app you want, then tap Always. Next time, it opens straight away.

To change it later, go to Settings, then Apps, find the app that currently opens DOCX files, tap Open by default or Set as default, and clear the defaults. Menu names vary by phone brand.

“No app can open this file”

No Word-capable app is installed. Use an online viewer in Chrome, or install Google Docs or Word.

The file name looks strange

Opening DOCX files on a Samsung Galaxy

Samsung phones use their own My Files app. To find a Word file:

1. Open My Files. It’s often in a folder called Samsung.
2. Tap Documents or Downloads.
3. Tap the DOCX file. If no app is set up, your phone will suggest installing one.

Instead of installing an app, you can open Samsung Internet or Chrome, go to opendocxfile.com and pick the file. It works the same way as in Method 1.

Opening DOCX files from other Android apps

From Telegram or Messenger

Tap the document to download it. Then tap it again and choose an app, or use the share button to save it to your Files app. Once it’s saved, any method in this guide will work.

From Microsoft Teams or Outlook

These apps can often show Word files inside the app. If they offer to install Word, you can skip that. Tap the three dots and look for Download or Save, then open the file with an online viewer.

From a website

When you tap a Word link in Chrome, it downloads. Pull down the notification shade and tap the download to open it, or find it later in your Downloads folder.

Keep your phone safe

Word files are usually harmless on Android, because phone apps don’t run Word macros. The bigger risk is fake “document reader” apps that ask for too many permissions or fill your phone with ads. If an app wants access to your contacts, messages or location just to read a document, don’t install it.

Also be careful with links inside a document. If a Word file from a stranger tells you to tap a link to “view the full file”, don’t. That’s a common trick.

Open a Word file on Android without the internet

If the DOCX file is already on your phone, you can still read it offline. The Google Docs app can make files available offline, and the Word app opens saved files without a connection.
