How to Open a DOCX File on Windows 11

You double-click a Word file on your Windows 11 PC and nothing useful happens. Maybe Windows asks which app to use. Maybe it opens a store page. Or maybe it opens Word and asks you to pay.

Don’t worry. Windows 11 can open DOCX files in several ways, and most of them are free. This guide walks you through each one, and shows you how to make DOCX files open the right way every time.

Does Windows 11 come with Word?

Not usually. Windows 11 doesn’t include the full Microsoft Word program. Some new PCs come with a trial of Microsoft 365, or with the Microsoft 365 app, which asks you to sign in and may ask you to subscribe.

Windows used to include WordPad, a simple writing app that could open DOCX files. Microsoft removed WordPad from recent versions of Windows 11, so many PCs no longer have it.

That’s why so many people get stuck. The good news is that you have plenty of free choices.

Method 1: Open it with Microsoft Word

If Word is installed, this is the simplest way.

1. Open File Explorer and find your DOCX file.
2. Double-click it. It should open in Word.
3. If it opens in the wrong app, right-click the file, choose Open with, and pick Word.

If Word says your subscription has ended, you can usually still open and read the file, but editing may be turned off. Use one of the free methods below to edit.

Method 2: Use a free online DOCX viewer

This is the quickest way without Word. It works in Microsoft Edge, Chrome or Firefox, and there’s nothing to install.

1. Open your browser and go to opendocxfile.com.
2. Drag the DOCX file from File Explorer onto the box, or click Choose file.
3. The document opens page by page.

You can zoom, copy all the text, print, save as PDF or go full screen. Your file stays on your PC because the browser opens it locally. Nothing is uploaded.

Method 3: Use Word for the web

Microsoft’s online Word is free with a Microsoft account. If you use Outlook, Xbox or OneDrive, you already have one.

1. Go to office.com and sign in.
2. Upload the DOCX file to OneDrive.
3. Click it to open it in Word for the web.

Method 4: Use Google Docs

Google Docs is another free online editor.

1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in.
2. Drag your DOCX file into Google Drive.
3. Double-click it, then click Open with Google Docs.

Method 5: Install LibreOffice

If you want a free desktop app that works offline, install LibreOffice.

1. Go to libreoffice.org and download the Windows version.
2. Run the installer and follow the steps.
3. Right-click your DOCX file, choose Open with, and pick LibreOffice Writer.

How to make DOCX files open with the right app

If Windows keeps opening DOCX files in the wrong app, change the default.

Option A: From the file

1. Right-click any DOCX file.
2. Choose Open with, then Choose another app.
3. Pick the app you want, like Word or LibreOffice Writer.
4. Click Always.

Option B: From Settings

1. Open Settings and go to Apps, then Default apps.
2. In the search box near the top, type .docx.
3. Click the app shown under .docx and pick a new one.

After this, double-clicking a DOCX file will open your chosen app every time.

How to see file extensions in Windows 11

Windows hides the end of file names by default. That makes it hard to know if a file is really a DOCX file.

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Click View at the top.
3. Choose Show, then tick File name extensions.

How to preview a DOCX file without opening it

File Explorer has a preview pane. Click View, then Show, then Preview pane, or press Alt+P. When you click a file, a preview appears on the right.

Troubleshooting on Windows 11

“How do you want to open this file?”

This means no app is set for DOCX files. Pick an app from the list, or install one of the free options above.

The file opens as a ZIP folder

A DOCX file is a ZIP folder inside. If a ZIP tool is set as the default, it’ll open the file as a folder. Change the default app for .docx, as shown above.

Word says the file is damaged or can’t be opened

Word opens the file in Protected View

Files from the internet or email open in Protected View for safety. You can read them. Click Enable Editing only if you trust the file.

Tip: if you open Word files every day, pin your favourite method to the taskbar. Right-click the app or browser icon and choose Pin to taskbar.

What about Windows 10?

Most of the steps here also work on Windows 10. The menus look a little different. For example, file extensions are under the View tab in File Explorer, and default apps are under Settings, Apps, Default apps.

Opening DOCX files from email and downloads on Windows 11

Most Word files arrive by email or from a website. Here’s how to open them without hunting through folders.

From Outlook or Gmail in your browser
