Step 1: Download the file

Tap the document in the chat. If it shows a download arrow, tap it and wait for the download to finish.

Step 2: Open it

Tap the document again. Android asks which app to use. If you have Google Docs, Word or WPS Office, pick one. The file opens.

If Android says “No app can open this file”

You don’t have a Word app. You have two choices:

• Install an app: get Google Docs or Microsoft Word from the Play Store, then tap the document again.

Where does WhatsApp save documents on Android?

On most modern Android phones, WhatsApp documents are saved here:

Internal storage > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp > Media > WhatsApp Documents

That folder is deep and hard to reach. Here’s an easier way:

1. In the WhatsApp chat, press and hold the document.
2. Tap the share icon.

If your connection dropped, the file may be incomplete. Tap it again in the chat to re-download. If it says the file is no longer available, ask the sender to send it again. WhatsApp only keeps media on its servers for a limited time.

The sender deleted it

How to send a Word file on WhatsApp

1. Open the chat.
2. Tap the paperclip (Android) or plus (iPhone) icon.
3. Choose Document.
4. Pick your Word file and tap Send.

Always send it as a Document, not as a photo. Photos get compressed, and a document sent as a photo becomes an image you can’t edit.

Why WhatsApp files open differently on each phone

Android and iPhone handle files in different ways. On iPhone, WhatsApp shows its own preview first, using the same tool as the Files app. On Android, WhatsApp hands the file straight to another app, so if no app can read Word files, you get an error.

That’s why the same document might open fine on your friend’s iPhone but not on your Android phone. It’s not the file. It’s what’s installed. An online viewer in the browser gets around this on both, since every phone has a browser.
