Microsoft Word costs money, and most people don’t need it just to read a file. If someone sent you a DOCX file and you don’t have Word, you still have lots of free ways to open it.

1. Use a free online DOCX viewer

An online viewer is the fastest way to open a DOCX file without Word. Here’s how it works with OpenDocxFile:

1. Go to the homepage in any browser.
2. Click Choose file or drag your DOCX file onto the box.
3. Read the document page by page.

You can zoom, copy all the text, print it, save it as a PDF or read in full screen. Your file isn’t uploaded, because your browser opens it on your device. That makes it a good fit for private documents.

It can’t edit files, and it reads DOCX only, not old DOC files.

2. Use Google Docs

Google Docs is a free word processor that runs online. It can open Word files and lets you edit them.

1. Go to drive.google.com and sign in.
2. Click New, then File upload, and choose your file.
3. Double-click the file, then click Open with Google Docs.

This one surprises people. Microsoft offers Word for free online. You only need a free Microsoft account.

1. Go to office.com and sign in.
2. Upload your file to OneDrive.
3. Click it to open in Word for the web.

4. Use LibreOffice Writer

LibreOffice is a free office suite you install on your computer. Writer is its word processor. It opens, edits and saves DOCX files, and it doesn’t need an account or the internet.

1. Download it from libreoffice.org and install it.
2. Right-click your DOCX file, choose Open with, then LibreOffice Writer.

When you save, LibreOffice may ask whether to keep the Word format. Choose Use Word 2007-365! to keep it as a DOCX file.

5. Use Apple Pages

Pages is free on every Mac, iPhone and iPad. It opens DOCX files and can send them back as Word files.

• Mac: right-click the file, choose Open With, then Pages.
• iPhone and iPad: open the file from the Files app and choose Pages.

To save as Word again, go to File, Export To, Word.

6. Use the Microsoft Word app on your phone

The Word app is free to download for Android and iPhone. You can open and read DOCX files without paying. Some editing features ask you to sign in, and a few need a subscription.

7. Use ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors

ONLYOFFICE is another free, open-source office suite. It looks a lot like Microsoft Office and does a good job of keeping Word layouts in place. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Will the file look the same as in Word?

Mostly, yes. Text, headings, lists, tables and pictures come through well in all of these tools. A few things can look different:

• Fonts: if your device doesn’t have the font used in the file, a similar one is used.
• Charts and SmartArt: may look different or be missing in some tools.
• Complex layouts: text boxes and multiple columns can shift a little.

Step-by-step: the fastest way on any device

If you’re in a hurry, follow these steps. They work the same on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

1. Save the file to your device. If it came by email or chat, tap or click the download button first.
