Why Won’t My DOCX File Open? 9 Fixes
You tap or double-click a Word file, and nothing happens. Or you get an error. Or it opens as a folder full of strange files. It’s annoying, especially when you need the document right now.
The good news is that most DOCX problems have a simple cause. This guide walks you through nine fixes, starting with the quickest. Work down the list until your file opens.

Fix 1: Install or choose an app that opens DOCX files
If your device asks which app to use, or says no app can open the file, it simply doesn’t have a Word app set up.

Fix 2: The file opens as a ZIP folder
A DOCX file is a ZIP folder inside. If a ZIP tool like WinRAR or 7-Zip is set as the default app, it opens the file as a folder full of XML files.
The file is fine. You just need to change the default app.
- Windows: right-click the file, choose Open with, then Choose another app. Pick Word or LibreOffice and click Always.
- Mac: select the file, press Cmd+I, choose an app under Open with, and click Change All.
Fix 3: Fix a broken file name
Downloads sometimes end up with names like report.docx(1), report_docx or report.docx.zip. Your device doesn’t recognise these as Word files.
Rename the file so it ends in exactly .docx. On Windows, turn on file extensions first: in File Explorer, click View, Show, File name extensions.

Fix 4: Download the file again
If a download stops halfway, the file is incomplete and won’t open. Signs of this:
- The file size is 0 KB or much smaller than expected
- The name ends in .crdownload, .part or .tmp
- Every app says the file is damaged
Delete the broken copy and download it again on a steady connection. If it came by email, open the email and download the attachment again. If it keeps failing, ask the sender to send it once more, or to share it with a link instead.
Fix 5: Enter the password
Word can lock a file with a password. When it’s locked, the content is scrambled. No viewer can show it without the right password.
Open it in Microsoft Word, Word for the web or LibreOffice. They’ll ask for the password. If you don’t know it, ask the person who sent the file. Online viewers, including ours, can’t open locked files.
Fix 6: Repair a damaged file
If Word says the file is corrupt, or that it “found unreadable content”, the file itself is damaged. Try these steps in order:
- Use Open and Repair in Word. In Word, click File, Open, Browse. Select the file, click the small arrow next to Open, and choose Open and Repair.
- Try another app. LibreOffice and Google Docs sometimes open files that Word refuses.
- Try an online viewer. Our DOCX viewer can sometimes show a file that Word won’t open.
- Get a fresh copy. Ask the sender to save and send the file again.
Fix 7: Check if it’s really a DOC file
Some files have the wrong extension. An old DOC file renamed to DOCX won’t open as DOCX. Try renaming it to .doc and opening it again.

Fix 8: Get out of Protected View
Word opens files from email and the internet in Protected View. You can read the file, but you can’t edit it. That’s a safety feature.
If you trust the file, click Enable Editing in the yellow bar at the top. If Word says the file failed to open in Protected View, go to File, Info and try again, or save it to your computer first, then open it.
Fix 9: Try a different device or app
Sometimes the problem is the app, not the file. An old version of Word, a phone app that needs updating, or a browser with too many extensions can all cause trouble.
- Update the app you’re using.
- Restart your device.
- Try the file on another phone or computer.
- Try it in a different browser if you’re using an online tool.

Error messages and what they mean
Word and other apps show different messages depending on what went wrong. Here’s what the most common ones mean in plain words.
“Word found unreadable content”
Part of the file is damaged. Word offers to recover what it can. Click Yes. You’ll often get most of the document back.
“The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents”
The XML inside the file is broken. Try Open and Repair, or open it in LibreOffice or an online viewer.
“The file is corrupt and cannot be opened”
The file is badly damaged or incomplete. Download it again or ask for a new copy.
“Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
This can mean the file is damaged, but it can also be a Word problem. Try another app first. If the file opens there, repair or update Word.
“This file is in a format that is not supported”
The app doesn’t read this type of file, or the file isn’t really a DOCX. Check the extension and try another app.
“The file is locked for editing”
Someone else has it open, or Word didn’t close properly last time. Open it as read-only, or wait and try again. On a shared network drive, ask whoever has it open to close it.
What to do if the file is really important
If you can’t lose this file, don’t keep trying random fixes on the only copy. First, make a backup copy of the broken file. Then try the fixes on the copy. That way, if something goes wrong, you still have the original to try again or hand to someone else for recovery.
If the file was on a work computer or shared drive, your IT team may be able to restore an older version from a backup.
